Did you know the first golf balls were constructed from a thin leather casing which was stuffed with feathers. The tighter the feathers were packed, the further the ball flew. These feather balls were used in golf until 1848. Today, golf balls are constructed in layers, usually two, three or four layers are used. No feathers in the modern ball, they are made from various synthetic materials such as urethane blends or surlyn. Regulation balls are covered in 336 dimples, these dimples minimise drag in the air and create more lift.
The ancient game of golf dates way back to the 1400’s on the East coast of Scotland no doubt the very beginnings were influenced by the many stick and stone games around at the time, but golf had a definite end game – the hole. Over the years golf has gone from strength to strength and is now a true world sport with courses on every continent of the world. Many International and national tournaments are played but, like any great sport, golf has maintained the grass roots appeal. It is at this level that golfers learn the art of golf betting, the bet may take the form of money or even who buys the drinks in the bar afterwards, maybe an accumulator bet on each hole with the stake money rolling over for a very nerve wracking 18th, whatever the form the bets adds yet another dimension to this most intriguing of games.
The worldwide professional game has many tournaments such as the Masters, Ryder Cup, British Open and many more. For mere mortals, who can only dream of playing like Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, placing a bet on the outcome of a major tournament can add an extra sparkle. The bets can be a simple amount on say Ernie Els to win the US Open or for the braver amongst you predicting the winners overall score in the British open.
The bets available are as varied as the game of golf itself, why not bet on who will win each of the four majors, a real test of your knowledge on the professional game.
